Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Tacca chantrieri ‘Black’ is a flowering tropical oddity featuring large, purple-black flowers, reminiscent of flying bats, with long, hanging whiskers. The foliage is attractive as well, with large, green, rippled leaves growing in a clump.
The incredibly weird 5-6 inch wide inflorescence arises during the summer from a rhizome bearing 3 to 4 shiny, ribbed, green leaves that are very ornamental. The plant grows to a height of about 50 cm tall. In colder climates they make excellent pot plants if planted indoors in well-drained loam. The long lasting inflorescence are also good as cut flowers. Taccas are also referred to as Devil's Whiskers.
Tacca chantrieri also known as the Black Bat plant. Is a smaller grower than the white form with large green leaves and dark black flowers. Flowers can be 3 to 5 inches across and are very unusual.
Tacca chantrieri is a beautiful and very exotic tropical plant oddly related to yams. The flower is dark purple to black and up to 10 inches across with long whisker like constructions that drape down from the flower sometimes as long as the plant is tall. The leaves are paddle shaped and pleated. It prefers shade and likes to stay moist but not soggy. They do well outside where it is warm and humid but need to come indoors during the winter months. This is not a problem since they don't need much light but must be kept humid with pebble filled saucers to remain happy. This plant is rare and endangered in habitat.
