Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the largest-leafed bamboos for temperate gardens, Indocalamus hamadae sprouts leaves up to two feet in length and four inches wide. The plant grows taller than other related species, usually growing to five to eight feet. It is used best as a border to wide paths or an understory plant growing beneath large trees. The leaves have an exceptional contrast to bamboos with smaller leaves, such as members of the Fargesia genus.
Hamadae is said to reach 15 feet tall with leaves up to two feet long. Our plants are closer to 5-6 feet tall. The culms are thicker than I. tessellatus and the leaves are slightly shorter. The only Japanese Indocalamus, these are beautiful as background plantings in woodland or tropical borders.
