The cream and green foliage will add a spot light to any shaded area. Vigorous and easy to grow, this evergreen to semi-evergreen vine seems to have few pests or diseases.
Kadsura is native from S Korea to Taiwan, which may account for the variable hardiness claims, Woodlanders calls 'Fukurin' zone 5 while many authorities list the species as zone 9. I'm convinced enough to put a plant on a south facing wall and microfoam it, my guess is zone six or seven which is do-able here with plenty of protection. We froze plants hard last fall and they dropped all their leaves, an excellent sign. 'Fukurin' is spectacular, with thick Hoya-like leaves broadly edged with cream. Don't confuse the genus with Kudzu; Kadsura is a member of the Schisandraceae. The 2cm wide sulfur yellow flowers are followed by 3cm wide scarlet red pendulous berry like fruits dangling from 3-4cm stalks in the leaf axils.
Kadsura Fukurin has beautiful glossy foliage that is evergreen in its warmer reaches. The variegation of the leaves in Fukurin is the best we've seen with sweeping creamy white and light green. Mother Nature is an artist!
A twining EVERGREEN (7B-10) vine from Asia with small white, FRAGRANT flowers in the leaf axils and handsome foliage. The creamy white blooms are mostly covered by foliage and not especially showy BUT they set the stage for red fruit in grape-like clusters that are -- showy, that is! 'Fukurin' is extremely variegated with large green leaves, edged in cream and yellow. Relatively slow growing, reaching about 10-12'. New growth emerges pink and old leaves show that same tendency in Fall. Hardy to 0 °F but drops leaves when temps reach 12 °F and stay that way.
