Subsessilis is a Korean species, relatively new to western cultivation; with yellow flowers that fade to pink, producing a multicolor effect. 'Canary' is a free flowering selection that I believe originated with Dick Lighty from the Mt. Cuba Center.
This variety produces pale yellow flowers, one of the first true yellow weigelas. Grows to a height of 3-5 feet and width of 4-6 feet. Best grown in full to partial shade. A great addition to any yard.
Wow, yellow blooms on a Weigela. Now isn't that just something! Prefers full sun for best bloom but tolerates light shade. And upright, rounded shrub with arching branches covered in Butter yellow, funnel-shaped bloom in spring. Occasional repleat bloom maybe occur later. Glossy green, lance-shaped leaves. An improved form of the species introduced by Dick Lightly at the Mt. Cuba Center. Flowers open yellow and fade to pink.
