A super fast growing shrub, Weigela 'Variegata' produces light pink blooms in late spring and early summer. The leaves are variegated with dark green and light gold even when planted in sun. The flowers are very similar to those of Azaleas but Weigela are often larger plants and bloom more heavily. Weigela are also far less fussy than Azaleas and are a good alternative for low maintenance gardens.
Weigela look their best when they are pruned young. If left alone they will grow fairly large, up to five or six feet tall, but can also be kept compact as short as three feet in height with summer pruning. Weigela bloom mostly on old wood but will produce some flowers all year long on new wood.
