Unlike the mop-headed, more formal Hortensias, lace caps produce large flat clusters of tiny flowers surrounded by a ring of colored petals; ??Mariesii? is half-way between... charming?. PSh/M (not dry)/acid:blue, alkaline: pink.
Excellent lacecap, usually pink, blue only in very acid soils, grows 4-5' tall.
The cream and green variegated foliage brightens up any shaded garden. The foliage is topped with domed clusters of pink or blue flower heads edged with 1-2" blooms surrounding the sterile inner flowers. Bloom color is based on soil pH: acid is blue, alkaline is pink. Prune immediately after bloom.
One of the more rewarding deciduous Hydrangeas -- in gardens for many years, but surprisingly never common. Shrubs, to 4 ft or more, for dappled shade with strikingly green and white variegated leaves and lavender to blue fertile flowers surrounded by an elegant ring of sterile florets. Care is for that of other Hydrandgeas with decent summer moisture in dry places. Takes fairly heavy pruning, still flowering each season. Frost hardy to USDA zone 5 - 6.
The typical Big Leaf Hydrangea but with stunning foliage -- green with a white edge. The variegated in this one is far more subtle than with Lemon Wave and shows only white, no gold. This is a classic for good reason.
