Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The American Beech is a splendid Eastern North American native, it has an excellent form creating a densely pyramidal tree to 50-80', splendid glossy foliage throughout the spring and summer turns bronze in the fall months, inconspicuous yellow-green spring flowers become interesting, edible, triangular shaped Beechnuts encased in spiny bracts and in winter it shows off its beautiful, smooth, light gray bark S/M
Heat tolerance helps this native tree out perform F. sylvatica in the Southeast, and yet it is also cold hardy. Best for large, open area where it is free to grow, reaching heights of 70-90 ft.
A slow growing deciduous tree with a dense form and wide spreading crown. 2-5" alternate leaves develop a beautiful golden brown fall color. Deciduous but tends to hold the attractive, tan dead leaves all winter which quiver beautifully in the slightest breeze. Produces a small three winged nut. This Native does have shallow roots, making it difficult to grow 'thirsty' plants under it but there are many plants (Hostas, Epimediums, Iris tectorum, Hellebores to name but a few which are happy in this dry shade condition.) Birds and squirrels love the 1/2 to 3/4" 'Beech Nuts'. The bark is smooth, thin, and gray in color even on the largest stems
