Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This vigorous 5-8', large-leaved shrub produces successive showy clusters of powder-blue flowers over a long summer season; ?No shrub I think of better earns a place in the English mixed border? (WA Forster, 1948). S/M/GDr
The large, glossy green foliage of this relaxed-looking Ceanothus creates an excellent foil for the profuse powdery blue flowers. More so than other species in the genus, this one will tolerate summer irrigation. Try it in the mixed border with white Lavender or yellow blooming Buddleja 'Honeycomb' and you'll see why it came to be called the 'Glory of Versailles'.
I used to think the only hardy Ceanothus were on the ugly side, not so, this has lovely fluffy powder blue plumes that are showy indeed. The foliage texture is outstanding as well, and better still it flowers mid to late summer when there aren't a lot of flowering shrubs in bloom.
Broadly oval, green leaves and large 4-6" panicles of powder blue, scented flowers bloom mid-summer to Thanksgiving. Prune hard each spring in March or April, cutting back nearly to the base of previous year's wood. Deciduous to semi-deciduous in Southern California, this bushy shrub grows to 8' tall. In areas of California with mild winters, these plants can be pruned in late autumn rather than spring. They flower on current year's wood. Colorful clusters of reddish seed-pods are frequently used in decorative arrangements. Excellent choice for colder climates. Hardy to 0 °F.
Bushy, deciduous shrub with alternate, oval, finely toothed, dark green leaves to 2-4" long, with paler undersides. From midsummer to autumn, bears pale powder blue flowers in large, terminal and axillary panicles, to 4" or more long. Dirr, "This is a show-stopper." Rare, rare, rare! Hybrid derived from C. americanus, a widespread eastern species, and C. coeruleus from Mexico. Europeans are wild about this plant but it's almost unknown here and nearly impossible to find! Hardy to 0 degrees. Almost surely more heat tolerant than other Ceanothus due to it's parentage.
