Brilliant red fall color and masses of bright red berries following white spring flowers make this medium to 8' shrub a wonderful choice for accent or hedge and absolutely amazing when planted in masses; native to wet or dry thickets of the eastern United States, it is prefect for damp sites or rain gardens. S/M-W
Deciduous shrub with a compact habit and oval-shaped green leaves that turn bright red in the fall. Clusters of white flowers appear in mid-spring and mature into red berries. The berries persist through the winter making this a nice 4-season interest plant. This U.S. native shrub is a great choice for borders or mass plantings.
This 7' t x 4' w shrub blooms white in April, has shiny leaves, brilliant red-orange in fall, with also brilliant red-orange berries. It's very low-maintenance and very easy-going, tolerating shade, tolerating clay, and tolerating nearly any amount of water or lack thereof. Handsome and an easy keeper. If only they were all that way ;). The common name is in reference to the tart and bitter berries which are technically edible but so astringent as to cause choking in those who deign to try them.
Brilliant 1/4" red berries are produced in the fall and persist for a long period of time. White flowers are produced in May. Thrives in moist well-drained soil. Great for mass plantings or borders.
Easy to grow, adapts to any soil after being established, even dry or wet. Variable in size depending on growth conditions. May occasionally sucker. Stupendous Fall berries and leaf color. A favorite of Finches, Jays, Juncos, and Grosbeaks. Brilliantissima is more compact, with shinier foliage and more, larger berries. AKA, Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliant'.
