Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A lovely, highly ornamental 6-10' shrub that is perfect as a specimen (especially if pruned to be a standard) and stunning as a hedge; dark-purple spring foliage contrasts beautifully with the abundant white tinged pink, fragrant, single flowers, the purple leaves deepen to a dark purple-green in summer, (the more sunlight the better the leaf color)and turn to dark-red in fall; July bring small dark cherries that are much loved by birds; this is a wonderful choice for urban areas with its resistance to pollution and heat tolerance. S/M
Purple Leaf Sand Cherry is a hardy flowering tree with reddish-purple foliage that keeps its color all summer. Because of this it makes a great contrast to green plants. Eye-catching flowers of pink and white really put on a show. Birds love the small cherries on Purple Leaf Sand Cherry.
Small tree with fragrant, pink flowers in spring after leaf emergence. Flowers form into small black fruits.
Purple Sandcherry is a hybrid shrub or small tree with deep purple colored leaves and stems, as well as light pink or white flowers. Purple Sandcherry is a very useful landscaping plant because of its purple color year-round because of the purple stems. Plants size up quickly and are usually reach their full size in 1-2 years. Prunus cistena makes for an excellent focal point in landscapes, especially when surrounded with a few brightly colored plants such as Goldmound/Gold Flame Spirea or light colored Heuchera. We prune our Purple Leaf Sandcherries to about six inches tall each winter, which causes the plants to produce huge numbers of new canes growing to about five feet each summer. Other people prune theirs into a small tree form, which generally allows for heavier flowering. If you want to grow your Purple Sandcherry into a tree form prune away all but the strongest of the upright trunks each winter. You can remove the lower 1/3 of branches each winter as well to encourage a taller street tree form.
A deciduous shrub with intense reddish-purple leaves which hold thru the summer. Single, pink fragrant flowers appear after the leaves have emerged. They are followed by small blackish fruit. Fine textured -- very high quality foliage. Prune, if needed, after flowering. A hybrid between P. pumila and P. cerasifera 'Atropurpea'
