Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the hardiest and most accommodating of conifers, this ruggedly beautiful eastern U.S. native forms a medium-large tree 30-65' of broadly conical habit, dark-blue scale-like leaves contrast with the delightful red-brown shredding bark, aromatic wood is used for cedar chests and the berries are much loved by birds; a wonderful choice for tough locations as it is tolerant of cold, deer, drought, rocky soil, black walnut and air pollution! With one of the best drought resistances of any native conifer in the eastern United States, the Eastern Red Cedar is an excellent hedge choice for drier climates. Though it prefers moderately moist soils, the tree also tolerates a variety of different growing conditions, from humid swamps to more arid environments. The Eastern Red Cedar is a columnar evergreen conifer with a fluted base and horizontal branching that can grow up to 65 feet tall in the wild. The unique bark is colored gray to reddish-brown, shredding into long thin strips on mature trees, and the scale-like foliage is a stately dark blue-green.

Native to the entire country East of the Rockies and up into Canada. A slow growing, dense conifer that smells just like a Christmas Tree should! Put a sprig of foliage in a pan on a wood stove and the smell is instant Christmas! Even in summer! The berries are green in Spring, turning very glaucous blue by Fall on female plants. Eastern Red Cedar is a host plant for the Juniper Hairstreak butterfly and it attracts birds as well and provides nesting for Hummingbirds. Unsexed seedlings
