This handsome, fast-growing cultivar forms a neat pyramidal, 30-40' tree without pruning; it is a rich bright blue-green during the growing season and bronzy green during the winter; reputedly one of the hardiest.
Yoshino' is a fast growing variety of Japanese Red Cedar that develops a tighter branching habit and an even conical form like a dense Christmas tree. The leaves also retain their summer color during the winter better than most other varieties with far less bronzing.

There are hundreds of varieties of Japanese Red Cedar, including some very interesting forms such as Elegans which grows in large plumes and Golden Promise which features butter-yellow foliage and grows to only a foot or two tall.

Caring for Cryptomeria japonica
Very little pruning or shaping is required, but you can lightly prune plants each year to encourage a specific shape. Fertilize in the spring with a slow release pellet, we like to use Osmocote Plus 20-10-10. You can double the growth rate by providing well drained soil and a slow release fertilizer compared to plants in poor soil with no fertilizer. Avoid over watering Cryptomeria; although they can handle moist conditions they do best when the soil is allowed to dry out a little bit between watering.
Evergreen, medium sized tree. Fast growing, upright pyramidal form with green foliage in the summer that may become bronze-green in cold weather. Growth Rate fast, 12"+ annually
One of the very best of the full sized Japanese Cedars, 'Yoshino' grows full and fast into a dense narrow column 10 feet tall in ten years. Handsome green leaf color holds up well even in cold weather. Yoshino was originally introduced around 1928 by the Yokohama nursery of Japan, and arrived in America about 10 years later. It is only now becoming well known. It is being touted as a substitute for Leyland Cypress in the southeast. Awards: Georgia Gold Medal Winner. Recommended by: the United States National Arboretum
