Large, crepe-paper-like, white flowers above crinkled foliage as well as tough, drought-tolerance make this medium shrub a garden stalwart. S/D
Spreading habit growing 2-5' high and almost as wide. Leaves, which are fragrant on warm days, are 2" long, crinkly, dark green above and paler beneath. Flowers are 1-2" across, white with a yellow basal spot on each petal, and bloom in late spring. A reliable favorite in California gardens. Southern Europe.
One of the two most hardy Cistus, a hybrid of C. populifolius and C. salviifolius. A dense, attractive mound of evergreen leaves all year, in summer it gives of a pleasant resinous scent. The flowers in spring and early summer are single crepe-paper-like white blooms with yellow centers which open from red buds. It's 'self-cleaning' -- every evening, it drops every petal and replaces them the next morning with brand new, perfect fresh new blooms! Talk about fresh flowers! Brand new every day! In winter foliage takes on reddish, coppery or purplish tones. Very drought tolerant, good for holding slopes and will come close to blocking all weeds. Prefers sun but will take 1/3 day shade. Best in gravelly or sandy soils. Tolerates sea shore and salt. Grows for our friend in Staunton, VA, Zone 6B. Great Plant Picks - Miller Botanical Garden.
