Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This is a rare intergeneric hybrid between Hippeastrum (amaryllis) and Sprekelia formosissima (Aztec lily) resulting in a plant with perfectly intermediate characteristics between its two parents. The vigorous 'Durga Pradhan' quickly forms a large clump of narrow amaryllis-like foliage. In mid to late spring the one foot tall stalks hoist richly-coloured crimson-red sprekelia-shaped flowers. Full sun in well-drained soil or grow as a pot specimen.
Mr. Udai Pradhan of India produced this rare man-made bigeneric hybrid in the '70s. This cross of Hippeastrum (amaryllis) x Sprekelia formosissima (Aztec lily) created the perfect combination of the two plants. The flowers are a rarely seen deep red. The bulbs offset readily and will form a large clump. In the north, this will perform best in a dry, well drained spot in full baking sun. In the south, some shade is best. They make excellent potted plants in colder zones. The bulbs are rather small this year ( 2011) so we are selling them at a discount. Most are a little over an inch across. With fair conditions I expect them to bloom in the spring of 2012.
