Blood flower is a bulb with up to nine leaves per season with sheathing bases that create a pseudostem. In late summer it will produce a single spherical flower head almost one foot across much like an ornamental onion but bright red with bright yellow anthers. The decorative red berries can remain on the plant for up to two months. Use as a pot specimen placed in the part shade to part sun garden. Keep above five degrees Celsius in winter or as a house plant.
Attractive wavy basal foliage frame these 12-18" tall flower stems. Each stem holds aloft a 2-3" umbel of scarlet florets, looking a bit like the more familiar alliums from spring. These summer bloomers produce new stalks and globe flowers for two months, earning their place in border fronts and mixed containers. This South African exotic Why Grow African Blood Lilies? Scadoxus multiflorus also known as the blood lily is a native to Africa. the foliage is dark green wide leaves grown from a large bulb held up with spotted stems. The main reason people always want the plant are for the large glob like structure of the red flowers which are held up on a large petiole. Flowers are around 1 to 2 inches tall and wide and form a glob that can be 5 to 8 inches across. This plant is seasonal and will go dormant in winter months. Which makes it great for digging and storing. I have also found that if well protected and mulched plants have stayed out all winter here in zone 6. I would not recommend this unless they are heavily protected or if you have extra plants to test.
This 12" tall bulb plant grows a ball with the red blooms and is spectacular!
This is another beauty originally from South Africa. They are hardy in zones 8-11 (7 with mulch and good drainage) and can be grown in a pot elsewhere. Prefers partial shade but they will flourish even in heavy shade. The spectacular flowerhead is a huge spherical umbel consisting of up to 200 brilliant red starry flowers, with a lacy appearance that are held clear of the foliage at the end of a solitary stem. The flowers last about 1 to 2 weeks and make superb cut flowers! I saw this plant potted up at Home Depot the other day for $40. The bulbs we are selling are about 2" across. They get bigger but I have found this size is the best value.
