Allium 'Gladiator' is a broadleaf deciduous perennial bulb / corm / tuber with green foliage. In spring blue and purple flowers emerge. Attracts bees and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun and regular - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in summer. Allium 'Gladiator' has large, fragrant lavender-purple spheres the size of soft balls on 3-4 foot stems. Few plants can offer the unique flower forms of ornamental onions. Every garden should have Alliums. Plant in multiples of 3, 5, 7 or more. Don't fret when foliage starts to die back just before flowering. It's normal. Just trim the leaves.

True to its name, 'Gladiator' is a crowd pleaser that asserts fantastic giant globes shouldered by tall hefty stems and rugged sword-shaped green basal foliage. Vibrant purple blooms, 4 to 5 in. wide, exuding a sweet yet pungent aroma, are composed of tightset green-eyed florets with a metallic luster. A hybrid between Allium hollandicum and most likely Allium macleanii, this Allium can be staged throughout a stand of white and yellow Verbascums for spectacular colors and divergent flower forms.
