Striking little bulbous perennial from Central Asia with 12-18” blooms May-June true blue flowers in round 1” clusters in slowly spreading clumps (may self-sow but not considered invasive); narrow grassy leaves often emerge before flowering and disappear. Enjoys full sun, dryish to moderate moisture in well-drained soil, dislikes winter wet; attracts butterflies, deer resistant, easy care heirloom!  USDA Zone 4/9  3" pot
Ornamental onions offer intriguing spherical or egg-shaped inflorescences comprised of hundreds of tiny flowers. Allium caeruleum has royal blue flowers and hails from central Asia, western Siberia and China. The leaves wither by the time the flowering begins so plant some low growing perennials just in front of or on top of the bulbs to mask the foliage. Available in spring as potted plants and in fall as dry bulbs.
A stand out because of it's true blue color, this allium is a stunning mixed with yellow, peach and coral companions (see foxtail lilies). Allium caerulem has earned the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticulture Society for it's outstanding garden performance.
