A small-leaved cultivar with brilliant crimson-scarlet foliage in spring; its multi-branching, shrub-like habit and small 2" leaves make it an ideal container or bonsai subject. PSh/M
Chishio Improved Japanese Maple is a small multi-branched shrub-like tree with a wide range of foliage color throughout the year. Spring foliage emerges a brilliant pink-red with touches of salmon and bronze. Leaves turn to green for summer before showing off in fall with shades of red and orange. This tree does well in containers or planted in the ground, and makes an excellent bonsai candidate. Chishio Improved Japanese Maple will bring a stunning pop of color to any corner of the garden!
Chishio Improved' produces one of the widest range in leaf colors throughout the season of any Japanese Maple, starting out with a light pink to bronze color in the spring that turns to a blue-green by mid-summer. In the fall the leaves turn a beautiful orange with dark red patches.
The form differs from other Japanese Maples in that it grows much wider than other varieties with denser branching. The growth rate is medium to moderate and trees will mature quickly without becoming too aggressive down the road. Little pruning is required to keep a good form but some occasional winter pruning can shape 'Chishio Improved' into a perfectly rounded sphere.

Because of the dense branching habits this variety is often considered to be a better choice for bonsai use than other varieties.

'Chishio Improved', also known as 'Shishio Improved', is another tree that performs well with full sun in my Tennessee garden. Its leaves emerge red in spring changing to a cool green in summer, giving this tree a two-toned appearance. In fall, 'Chishio Improved' transforms into a fiery-red beauty. This small-leafed cultivar is a prolific grower, eventually reaching 8 feet in the landscape.
Acer palmatum 'Shishio Improved' Great Spring Pink Japanese Maple Tree. We love the contrasting colors from new to older leaves throughout the seasons. A must have for any garden needing some warm pop.
Its prolific branching character promotes a rounded growth habit. Early spring leaf color is a surprising mix of bronze and pink. A small tree with dark burnished blue-green summer foliage and orange-red fall color.
PALMATUM, green. Syn. 'Chishio Improved'. Intensely pink spring growth shines on this twiggy, bushy maple. It sports small leaves and offers good green summer color. It develops firmer, stronger branches than 'Chishio' and has a more upright habit in the landscape. Excellent for containerized specimen.

This is one of the trees in the corallinum group as you can tell by the spring leaf coloring. This tree is more likely to 'tree up' than many of the others, by which I mean that it will get some height (12') and look more like a tree than a bush. zone 5.
'Chishio (Shishio) Improved' is an 8-12' selection of a Japanese Maple with noteworthy brilliant red new leaf growth and twigs in the spring. The small 5-7 lobed leaves will take on green tones in summer followed by red and orange fall color. Habit is upright with slightly pendulous branches. 3-4' plants shipped in spring.
