One of the most beautiful of the decorative grasses, its bright-green, narrow leaves are beautifully and variably striped with creamy-white. This graceful two foot clumper is pretty in autumn as well when their leaves turn a pretty rose color. A wonderful and rare Japanese grass which is a superb choice for cascading over rocks, edging pathways or for a dramatic look plant it en masse to capture the elegant look of the blades rippling in the breeze. PSh/M
If you are one of ‘those people’ who despises yellow in plants…or if you simply prefer cream variegation, then this is the Japanese Forest Grass for you! It’s not as widely grown as its golden relatives, but it’s every bit as good a performer. Makes elegant clumps 12” tall and 30” wide of cream striped, arching leaves. Light shade, average garden conditions. Winter deciduous.
The indispensable Japanese forest grass, in this form the leaves have narrow lines of white. This is the most vigorous form of the species we grow, it has spread in the garden to form a huge patch a good five feet across and seems taller and more upright than the yellow variegated selections. Makes me wonder how much variation in size and growth habit there might be in the wild. Giant or miniature versions of this species would be pretty darn amazing... zone 4
Taller than other selections of Hakone grass, 'Albo Variegata' is also more vigorous and should be planted in groups of three or more for best effect. It is very tolerant of sun if the soil does not dry out, but would be happiest in a bright shade. Narrow stripes of cream accent the edges and centers of each leaf blade. Grows 24-30" in height.
A rare and hard to find, lovely grass for part to full shade, the leaves striped in green and white on arching stems. Slow-growing, to only 12-15" tall in clumps a bit wider, these add grace and texture to the shady garden with rich soil and consistent summer moisture. Tiny green flowers are hardy noticeable in the late summer. Frost hardy to -10 °F, USDA zone 6.
Soft mounds of green and white bamboo-like leaves on 16" tall x 24" wide clumping grass. Wonderful colors in autumn.
The white-variegated hakone grass has been unjustly overshadowed by its gold-leaved kin. Its handsome striped foliage provides a bright accent in a shady garden. The effect is similar to that of ribbon grass (phalaris), without the invasive tendency. Grows larger than 'Aureola'.
