Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Though attractive peeling bark and somewhat larger habit differentiate this small tree/large shrub from Cornus mas, it has similar VERY early small yellow flowers, rich red fall color and red ?cherry? fruits. S-PSh/M
Native to Japan and Korea, officinalis is similar to Cornus mas with larger brighter yellow flowers a week or two earlier than mas. There is a plant in Seacrest that is 22'h and 35' wide after 46 years.
Japanese Cornel. A small to medium sized tree, 15-25' tall, it is often confused with Cornus mas because of the very similar display of citron yellow flowers borne on bare branches in late winter. Small red cherry like fruit are born in late summer. Simple 4" leaves turn wine-purple in the fall, and the bark has a pleasing exfoliating texture for winter interest.
