Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A delightful woodland groundcover from the Appalachians whose long rooting runners have small round leaves and clusters of purple and white snapdragon-like blossoms close to the carpet. PSh-Sh/M
One of the coolest little ground covers. Even though its in the Lamiaceae family, its not aggressive or invasive. Dark green, slightly glossy, 1" cordate leaves are somewhat evergreen. In the early to mid Spring, lavender 1" trumpet like flowers persist over a long period. One of its greatest merits is that it will practically grow in the dark. This makes it especially useful in those foreboding dark corners of the garden where you haven't been able to sustain any plant life.
A creeping mint that's a great native substitute for Ajuga or Lamium. Long trailing stems run across the ground and root along the way, forming a green carpet in late spring covered with hundreds of blue flowers opening to reveal spotted throats. Grows well in part or full shade in moist to average soil. Tolerates a dry shady site, but will not spread as freely.

What has spring time violet blue 1" tubular flowers, grows 4-6" tall, spreads by creeping runners, and grows in moist or drier soil, and in sun or partial shade. Meehan's Mint! This versatile and underused Northeast native is a good substitute groundcover for Lamium and Ajuga.
