Excellent groundcover potential, this sturdy and tolerant, fine-textured mound (to 18" high x 2' wide) produces its medium-blue flowers (as its name indicates!) Sep & Oct after most flowers have left for winter vacation. S/M
(AROMATIC ASTER) Bushy, compact perennials 1-2’ high and wide; blue to blue-purple rays surround yellow disk centers in profusion in fall (August>October). Butterfly and bee magnet. Native to Midwest, this late bloomer is nice in boquets. Easily grown in full sun, sandy to clay soils and tolerates drought but prefers regular moisture. Foliage is fragrant when bruised or crushed. Masses of 1" yellow-eyed bluish purple daisies absolutely cover this plant for weeks in late summer and fall. October Skies Aster is a low mounding perennial that develops into a compact shrub-like plant by flowering time. Excellent fall color for the garden as well as drought tolerance and pest and disease resistance make this an excellent addition to the perennial or wildflower border.Aromatic Aster is native to much of the central and eastern US. Excellent drought tolerance once well-established as well as good deer resistance and reliability. Pruning if necessary should not be done after June as you may be removing flower buds for the late summer/fall show. Cut back the stems to the rosette in winter. May not tolerate poor drainage but at the same time will do well in most soils from clay, calcareous, limestone, and sand.
It has been said that the October sky in New England presents the deepest shade of blue. Aster 'October Skies' reflects this blue color when viewed in just the right light. Plants form tidy mounds 18" x 18", and bloom Sept-Oct. Note that this Aster has clean foliage and is drought resistant.
