Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Higasayama Japanese Maple is a vigorous grower. It has a semi-reticulated and curly leaf structure. It is an older cultivar from the early 1800s. The fall colors are reds to oranges. It can handle more sun than most variegated maples. Higasayama Japanese Maple will put on a show in the spring that will WOW you!
Popular in Japan for landscaping and bonsai for over 100 years, because of the ever-changing show it provides; slender leaves unfold pink and crimson, then margined cream and pink and finally turn yellow and orange in fall. S-PSh/M
Dense foliage; a wonderful medium-sized tree for the landscape. Plant where backlit by the sun for full effect. Fall color orange and crimson. Excellent bonsai plant. Old cultivar from early 1800's.
People get really excited about this cultivar because of the leaf coloration, but it is a major pain to get the tree to exhibit it. If the tree is growing hard, none of the new leaves will show this leaf so if you want to see it, give your tree no fertilizer and hardly any water. zone 5
New growth a kaleidoscope of red, pink & cream, crinkly leaves curve downward, yellow-orange-red in fall. Zones 5-9.
PALMATUM, variegated. Syn. 'Higasa yama'An upright-growing tree, forming a tall slender V-shape. Slow growing twiggy stems bear two forms of foliage, a characteristic often seen and enjoyed in Acer palmatum. Tiny, crinkled, variegated spring leaves curl as though the leaf margin is too small for the leaf. Various green leaves have white markings and are edged in pink. A second flush of growth in late June or July reveals small, flat summer leaves of the typical palmate shape.
