Buy Stewartia pseudocamellia 'Ballet'

Stewartia pseudocamellia, the Japanese Stewartia, is a beautiful, medium-sized, slow-growing tree related to tea with a pyramidal shape and showy, white, early summer flowers with orange-yellow anthers that look like Camellia. The exfoliating bark becomes spectacular as the tree ages offering mottled tones of reddish brown, green, beige, grey, and white - perfect for winter interest. The foliage also turns beautiful tones of red and orange in autumn. One of the best all around trees for urban gardens. Possibly hardy into zone 4. 'Ballet' has larger flowers than the species - up to four inches across! - and particularly good fall colour.

This Polly Hill selection has very large white flowers in May-July. The fall color is beautiful orange red yellow.

This outstanding form of Stewartia features larger blossoms than the species; the white camellia-like blooms feature golden-yellow centers and are up to four inches across! This lovely 30-40' tree blooms over a long summer season and this cultivar spreads a little wider as well creating a gorgeous silhouette. Autumn finds this specimen dressed in glorious shades of orangey-red before the leaves drop to expose the appealing exfoliating bark. A top notch tree for all seasons; from the Polly Hill Arboretum in MA. S-PSh/M

A selection from the Polly Hill Arboretum, MA. These large, to 4", blooms dance along lovely strong branches. The bark is the same patchy multicolored bark we love but the growth habit is more spreading than the species!
