Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Stachyurus is a deciduous shrub with early spring flowers that bloom before the foliage emerges. The flowers are yellow-green, pendant, 4" catkin-like racemes that hang from the branches like a curtain. Its green leaves with yellow margins may turn rosy red and yellow in fall. The genus name comes from the Greek words stachys (spike) and oura (tail) in reference to the flowers. Plants in this genus are sometimes commonly called spiketail, also in reference to the flowers. 10'Tx8'W at most. May remain half that size. It prefers humusy acidic, well-draining, moist soil. It takes a fair amount of water for the first two years, and then doesn't want to be too wet.
The butter-yellow racemes of flowers herald spring and bright, gold edged leaves extend the beauty throughout the summer. This is a full-sized 'Spiketail' shrub, with its burgundy arching stems and lovely fall color.
