Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Also known as the European Black Pine, Pinus nigra is a medium size Pine species that often forms a light multi-trunk habit with a thick trunk and shorter height. As trees mature they develop a stocky appearance with their low, spreading branches - the opposite of almost all other pine species. This branching habit is apparent even on young seedlings which tend to have several tall branches that face upwards and grow almost as tall as the main leader.

Typically the Austrian Pine prefers locations with cool summers, in areas with hot summers these trees do best with small amounts of afternoon shade and protection from strong winds.
Coniferous evergreen with low-spreading branches and a broad, flat-topped habit at maturity. In youth it is more pyramidal in shape. Dark green needles, that can be either straight or curved, densely cover the branches. Bark of this pine is among the best! Dark brown furrows and flattened ridges are very attractive. This hardy pine will tolerate coastal conditions, poor soils, clay or alkaline soils, heat and drought. Fantastic choice for a specimen tree, or also as a screen or windbreak. Growth Rate fast, 12"+ annually
Pyramidal when young becomes flat topped. Deer resistant, tolerates wind & cold. USDA Zones 5-8.
This impressive tree originated in the forests of Austria and extends as far south as Turkey. Very rough, dark brown and deeply cut bark along with shining dark green needles make for an unforgettable show. This is an excellent background tree which is very dark green, viewed from a distance. Mature height generally reaches to about 50', sometimes greater.
