Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The Dwarf Swiss Pine, more commonly known as the Mugo Pine, is one of the shortest naturally growing pines in the world and the Mughus subspecies will typically grow to only five or six feet tall. Rather than growing upright they form a round ball, which can be enhanced with regular pruning to form a perfectly spherical pine. Mugo Pines are extremely popular in Japanese gardens, rock gardens, and small landscapes as well as for bonsai. The needles are short and the trees produce plenty of short, pliable branches.

Mugo Pines are one of the most cold hardy plants, rated to -50 degrees, but are also thrive in hot landscapes. They prefer well drained soil and full sun.

This evergreen conifer is an outstanding addition to any landscape with its year-round, rich green needle color. Low-growing and low maintenance globose growth habit make a nice plant for areas such as a rock garden, front border, or near a water feature. Growth Rate slow, 3-6" annually
Compact flattened-globe form. Light green needles. Good in containers or rock garden. USDA zones 2-9.
Mugo pine is an excellent landscape plant useful in many areas. In its taller forms, it is a small tree. In its lower forms, it can be a ground cover with a low 'bun shape' and soft appearance. Quite versatile, as it will thrive in many situations. The forms we offer are generally the smaller types. It adapts well to shearing in the spring to keep the lower forms very flat. All will do well in Zone 9 and even Zone 10 of California (though not in desert heat), but possibly not as well in the Southeast.
