A dense, prostrate form of Jack pine with emerald green needles, this slow-growing seedling selection can drape down a wall or spread out in a low mass on a bank. Even after 30 years, a very old specimen only gets about 3' tall in the center and 15' wide.
Pinus banksiana 'Schoodic' - A flat prostrate form of Jack Pine. Green leaves on small dwarf stems that are on a spreading dwarf flat mat. At 20 years old, is no bigger than 2' x 4'. Found around 1979.
Prostrate, mat forming, limbs splay outwards with twists and turns. Can stake for height. Deer resistant. Zones 2-8.
This selection from the Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts is rather tiny. 'Schoodic' is a prostrate, mat forming dwarf variety of the Jack Pine. Short, dark green needles and open foliage appear on horizontal, irregular and twisted branches. It will grow 2-4" per year.
