Large, beautiful, almost columnar 40-60' tree found growing in the limestone soils of the upper Drina River Valley in Serbia, where it can reach 100', featuring pendulous branchlets , somewhat flattened needles that are glossy green above, white below, pretty violet cones that mature to yellow-brown and brown bark that breaks into scaly plates; adapts to hot humid climates better than some conifers. S/M
Narrow, spire-like evergreen, pendant branches ascend at tips. deer resistant. Zones 4-8.
Preferring cold winters, this magnificent tree has a narrow, columnar habit capable of reaching 100'. Bark is orange-brown to purple-brown, cracking and flaking in fine plates. This might be considered one of the best spruce for use in eastern U.S. gardens.
