Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Norway Spruce is one of the most cold tolerant plants we grow, thriving in temperatures as low as -50 degrees! Norway Spruce is quite unusual in its appearance and seems to grow more like a true fir (hence the species abies which is the genus for true firs). Unlike with most Spruce, the needles lay flat in neat rows and the branches also develop in a mostly horizontal form. It makes an excellent cut or living Christmas tree as the branches are strong and the needles grow quite dense. It shears well and can also be grown as an evergreen hedge. The short needles make this an excellent choice for bonsai.

Norway Spruce is one of the faster growing species of the genus and can grow quite tall under ideal growing conditions, although in most situations it tends to stay around 40 to 50 feet tall. Trees that are several centuries old in the wild have reached heights of more than 200 feet tall, making it one of the tallest Spruce species in the world.

An upright growing tree with undulating branches and profuse cone production. Cones appear mostly at the very tips of branches, beginning red in the spring, maturing to brown. A very ucrious yet popular tree.
This evergreen conifer tree thrives well in average soil conditions, but prefers moisture in the soil to maintain its deep green color. It is highly valued as an ornamental and timber tree. One of the best conifers for shelters and windbreaks, as its branches grow densely into one another. The branches of Norway Spruce trees droop gracefully as trees matures, making this a very attractive ornamental. Growth Rate medium
Will cascade or can be staked for height with cascading branches, 4" cones. Deer Resistant. Zones 3-8.
Pyramidal habit with pendulous branchlets, this conifer will reach 100' in height with a 40' spread. Fast grower in youth, it can grow to 75' in 50 years. For best growth, give it moderately moist, sandy, acidic, well drained soil. Prefers a cool climate but likes full sun. Make sure young plants have adequate moisture.
