Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A nice magnolia with more shrubby rather than tree-like growth habit, reaching maybe 12 to 15 feet high. Flowers are three to four inches, and in various shades of pink and purple. These are seedlings from the variety 'Nigra' which has exceptionally dark flowers, so these should be on the darker side. One of the best things about this species is its tendency to bloom late enough to avoid getting zapped by spring frosts the way so many other magnolias usually are. Zone 5
Fairly large, shiny, dark green leaves. 8-12 feet tall and about as wide. Lovely purple flowers in late April and early May. Our re-bloom sporadically over the summer. Zones 5-8

Broad-spreading in habit, this deciduous shrub will slowly grow to 8-12' in both height and width. It has an open branch structure, and flowers are borne in early May on bare wood. Six petals, white to red-purple on the exterior and white interior, form a blossom 3-4" wide. Blooms at 4-5 years. Place in a sunny but sheltered location in slightly acid, moisture retentive soil. Some pruning may be required for shaping. Native to China.
