Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Considered to have the largest leaves of any other cold hardy bamboo, Indocalamus tessellatus sprouts leaves up to two feet in length and four inches wide. The plant grows low on the ground, usually growing at three feet and sometimes reaching five. It is used best as a border to wide paths or an understory plant growing beneath large trees. The leaves have an exceptional contrast to bamboos with smaller leaves, such as members of the Fargesia genus. This bamboo is very low growing like a groundcover, where Indocalamus sp. Hamadae has an upright habit with leaves that point upwards rather than hang down.
The one gallon and sometimes two gallon plants of this species tends to be fairly small compared to other bamboos because the leaves are smaller and the stems are short. During the second year when branching occurs the leaves will grow larger, causing the plant to suddenly catch up in size. This is generally true for most members of the Sasa, Pseudosasa, Indocalamus, and Pleioblastus genera.

This dwarf bamboo has long broad leaves and prefers a shady location. Ours grow to about 4 feet and have very long and broad leaves, easily 4" by 20" long! They adapt well to pots and look very tropical.

I'm drooling over pictures of this beautiful selection with long, glossy, deep green leaves, almost covering the culms in tropical luxury, yet it's cold hardy! Does best in dappled shade or morning sun only. In Asia, the leaves of this species are favored for wrapping foods in cooking. Does well in containers, even indoors, so we all can have it!
