Crocosmia ‘Star of the East' is an award-winning, classic and one of the best bred Montbretias. Emerging in mid to late summer on tall flower wands are deep orange flower buds opening up to large, 4 inch wide soft orange blossoms revealing creamy yellow throats with burgundy freckles. Green foliage provides vertical appeal with its narrow, strappy foliage. Growth habit is 40 to 48 inches tall. Highly floriferous, low maintenance and hardy. Requires well-drained soil. Great in borders, containers, mass planting, and for cut flowers. Popular with hummingbirds and and other pollinators. Deer and rabbit resistant.
With blooms larger than most other Crocosmias, 'Star of the East' evokes images of an illuminated sky and boasts slightly nodding, 3-_ in. flowers, which are indeed star-shaped and brilliant. Well above green swordlike foliage, amidst burnt orange buds and clay-colored calyxes, each choice flat-faced bloom shines brightly with dusky orange on the outside, soft orange inside, and a cream-colored center.
This exceptionally large flowered selection is going to be a star in any sunny garden where it's unrivaled flower size leaves most other Crocosmias wishing they hadn't been mired in ethical dilemmas and just gone ahead and done the testosterone injections.
