Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Piilu' has large, ruffled, light purplish-pink flowers with bold magenta bars. The heaviest bloomer in the collection, it flowers in May-June as double flowers then later as singles until October. Originating in Estonia the Kivistik clematis have a compact growth habit, copious blooms on the current season's growth, an unusually long bloom period, rich colours, great disease resistance, and hardiness to zone 3. Their compact size and long bloom time make them excellent in containers or in the garden.
Piilu is a selection from Estonia with loads of cute 4 inch blooms on a compact plant. Piilu means Little Duckling. Early flowers are double except in warmest climates. Kivistik, 1984. This is a Group 2 (B) Clematis, which means it begins flowering in early summer from last year's growth as well as flowering later on short canes from new growth. While pruning is not necessary, it can be used to shape the plant and encourage more flowers on new growth. These can be pruned in spring before new growth begins for a more floriferous show later in the summer or pruned after spring flowering so that the earlier show of larger, but fewer flowers can be enjoyed. Look for fat, healthy buds on sturdy branches, about a third down from the top and cut just above these healthiest buds. Remove dead or damaged branches any time.
An award winner and for good reason! The flowers are a light purple-pink with an eye-catching, wide, dark purple-red bar. It is one of the heaviest blooming Clematis, bearing flowers from top to bottom, even on one year old established plants. Blooms continuously. [Group A, June - September, 6-9']
