Purple-red if grown in sun or burgundy-green if grown in shade, this fantastic Japanese maple has plenty to recommend it. Its long, strap-like leaves, burgundy-orange when new, create a lacy appearance and contrast nicely against darker mature leaves. The
Villa Taranto – a dwarf maple is a reddish green and cream variegated version of Koto no ito. It grows well in full sun to partial shade and has a ‘V’ shape, which is common for many Japanese Maples. Villa Taranto is in the linearilobum group of maples which means it has string-like leaves. When a leaf first emerges as new growth it is wider compared to older leaves on the tree. Each subsequent year a leaf emerging from the same leaf node gets skinnier and skinnier – so older leaves growing lower on the branches become really skinny until they are like thin strings. Fall color is yellow to orange. Villa Taranto is not a large maple only reaching 5′ to 6′ feet tall and 5′ wide in 10 years. A nice addition to a small garden or grown in a patio container. Once established this cultivar is hardy to -20 degrees, USDA zone 5.

This excellent cultivar is a recent introduction from Europe, named after the Villa Taranto in Italy. Propagated and introduced in Holland. Long, narrow, 5-lobed leaves create a beautiful lacy effect. Brilliant new growth, pleasing gold in fall.
The star-like leaves of this Italian variety are really pretty. Leaves emerge red in spring, turning to green with red overtones for summer before putting on a gorgeous show of orange yellow in the fall. This bamboo leaf variety was named after a famous Italian Garden.
