Compact twiggy growth and small, deeply 5-lobed, 2-toned (new bright-red over older deep-red) leaves growing in ?tufts? are clues to this dwarf-red-round-leaves origin as a ?Bloodgood? ?witches? broom?; a delight! S-PSh/M
'Shaina' is a dwarf, shrubby maple that may grow to only 5 feet in ten years making it perfect for container or rock gardens. In th early 1980's, Richard P. Wolff of Red Maple Nursery, Pennsylvania, discovered a witches-broom on a 100-year old Japanese maple, propagated it, and called it "Shaina". Its leaves emerge bright red in spring, turning a dark maroon in summer, and back to a crimson red in fall. With many shades of red, this small tree brings color to any garden.
This wonderful dwarf Japanese Maple has small bunched up leaves. Spring flush will emerge pink-red changing to dark red for the summer. A wonderful affect takes place in mid-summer when new light red leaves emerge and contrast with older dark red leaves. Overall growth habit is compact with lots of branches. Fall color is fiery red!
Acer palmatum 'Shaina' - A dwarf red globe. Smaller than the species leaves on a dwarf round tree. Great for patios or rock gardens. Red fall color. Can take full sun. Leaves are the size of quarters.
From a witch's broom on variety atropurpureum, this diminutive red palmate-leaf variety changes to maroon as the season progresses. Fall color is bright crimson. It grows quickly at first, making it a profitable plant to grow. Does best in a container.
Palmatum Group -red ? Shaina is an excellent dwarf growing red Japanese maple. It originated as a sport of the very popular ?Bloodgood? Japanese maple. The growth habit is upright and compact to 5? in ten years, with lots of twiggy growth giving the branches a tufted look. The narrow pointed leaves are two-toned with bright red contrasting with dark red leaves. Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993.

This is the smallest growing of the groups of palmatums which are coral red in the spring and on the new growth later in the year. Also in the group are Shishio improved, Shindeshojo, Beni maiko. A mature specimen will probably be under 5'. zone 6
Limited supply. 'Shaina', a dwarf globular Japanese Maple, growing ultimately to about 6' tall and 4-5' wide, was discovered as a witch's broom on Acer p. 'Bloodgood', and is a stunning focal point. The small closely spaced leaves are a rich bronze red during the summer months, followed by a brighter shade of crimson in the fall. 3-4' plants for spring shipping.
PALMATUM, red. This sport of the well-known cultivar, 'Bloodgood', is a special semidwarf. An upright growing, compact plant that, when young, will produce vigorous new shoots. In later years, the growth becomes shorter and more dense. This outstanding plant for container or landscape has interesting two toned leaves which start as bright red changing to dark maroon-red. Each leaf has narrow, sharply pointed lobes. Outstanding!
