Acer palmatum 'Ryusen' PP18501 plant details

Don't miss the fact that this grows FLAT. If you want it to. You can stake it up to the height you like before letting it trail and weep. But as the ONLY Japanese Maple that is a weeping groundcover, it's a pretty stellar feature to show off. Picture it trailing over a wall, spilling down the sides of a big planter, flowing down a rock face like a leafy waterfall. So unusual and gorgeous. And then there's the fall color!

Acer palmatum 'Ryusen' PP18501 is a fast-growing broadleaf deciduous groundcover shrub or tree with green foliage. Attracts beneficial insects and birds. Grows well with sun - shade and even moisture - regular water. Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant and humidity tolerant.

Weeping (not cascading) form of A. palmatum. Unless staked, it will grow flat on the ground. This plant needs to be staked and whenever it's released it will weep. Deep green typical A. palmatum leaves that turn pretty red orange in the fall.
This unusual green Japanese maple has an incredibly pendulous habit, with slender, weeping shoots growing as much as six feet a year! Trained to a desired height, the selection cascades much more intensely than 'Jiro shidare,' which used to be considered
Ryusen Japanese Maple has palmatum foliage in a weeping form. You can attain additional height on Ryusen by staking it when young. This cultivar has attractive green star-shaped leaves which turn a brilliant mixture of oranges and reds in fall. The name 'Ryusen' means flowing waters. Ryusen Japanese maple works wonderfully in pots due to the flowing structure of the branches. Choosing an outstanding Ryusen Japanese Maple for your garden is a choice you won't regret.
Ryu sei is a green palmatum type leaf with a pendulous habit. The name in Japanese means ‘falling star’ which seems like the perfect name. The lead or terminal branch should be staked for height allowing the side branches to fall softly along-side. Spring growth is lemon green turning to a true green in the summer. Fall color is yellow to orange and scarlet-red. An awesome looking maple when properly planted and staked near a mound, cliff or wall allowing the branches to cascade down lower then the base. For Ryu sei height is really determined by staking. Without staking this cultivar will be more prostrate than high. But when staked to 6 or 7 feet and even taller the name ‘falling star’ is realized. This maple can handle the full hot sun or partial shade. Photos are courtesy of Talon Buchholz. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

'Ryusen' is a gorgeous and rare cascading form of the traditional upright Japanese maple. Medium-sized green palmate leaves turn yellow and then crimson in the fall. The name translates roughly to "Falling waters" or "Flowing river". The standards are grafted onto A. palmatum 'Arakawa' for its unique corky-bark texture. A very unusual combination. 'Ryusen' was found by Mr. Kobayashi from Kobayashi Maple Nursery in Japan. Photos taken in April and late October.
A new, very strictly weeping palmate, that looks like no other Japanese Maple on the market. In a container, the branches reach far beyond the bottom of the pot, so in the ground the branching would be lovely on a slope or over the edge of water where the true length can be seen. It has been proven to be a very vigorously growing cultivar. Can be staked and prune to create endless landscape options. Very tolerant to sun and heat. Growth Rate fast
'Ryu sei' is a relatively new unique weeping maple from Kobayashi Nursery in Japan. Leaves are palmate, not dissected. Color is green in spring and summer, changing to orange in fall. This unusual tree is the most pendulous of all maples. If not staked, it becomes a groundcover. 'Ryu sei' is quite the diva in full sun. Great for narrow, tight spaces.
Absolutely one of the most exciting new varieties. Ryusen is unlike any other Japanese Maple. Beautiful star like palmate leaves on heavy weeping branches. Ryusen is extremely vigorous and puts on a real show if it is staked up and then allowed to weep down, creating a beautiful waterfall effect. Fall color is orange.
This weeper is the saddest of all; it grows quickly as tall as the stake you put it on and then it cascades straight down forming a pillar of small palmate leaves. Sort of interesting actually. Fall color gold.
This is the only palmate form of Japanese Maple that is pendulous. RARE in the US. Lovely form as a staked plant, or even as a cascading groundcover down a hill. Bright green summer foliage, excellent yellow, orange, red fall color. Very vigorous and relatively easy to grow. Good for containers, too! PP 18501

PALMATUM, green. 'Ryusen' has a leaf style and color similar to Acer palmatum 'Jiro shidare', but it's more vigorous and a much stronger weeper, sending out long, slender shoots in youth. It also has striking orange-red fall leaf color. This form is also one of the few pendulous maples with palmate leaves. Discovered at Koboyashi Maple Nursery in Japan. We beleive you will treasure this plant.
