The large very pointed leaves of this handsome upright compact tree (to 6' x 3' in 10 years) turn bright red-purple when young to the darkest of reds; green by summer?s end, then a rainbow of red and yellow in fall. PSh/M
A compact, upright Japanese Maple with black-red, rugose foliage. Perhaps the darkest red of all Japanese maples. Leaves change to bronze-green by end of summer. Fall color displays a mix of yellow to red shades. Introduced by Buchholz Nursery.
Considered perhaps the darkest of any Japanese maple, this compact, slow-growing tree displays distinctive foliage throughout the growing season. Bright pink-red spring leaves become extremely dark purple-red with green ribs by summer and green by fall. As the season changes, fall colors erupt in oranges and reds. Deeply divided, wrinkled leaves that undulate and curve give the tree a somewhat coarse appearance.
Ruby Ridge is a gross palmatum--literally; the large leaves are coarse and rough looking and mean dark red; I love it. The stems and limbs are thick and heavy, but it is a very slow grower.
MATSUMURAE, red. Large leaves with very pointed 1" lobes cut back to the petiole of a rich dark purple color with green veins. Very different look on this strong, short plant.
