Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The beautiful, soft-green, 7-lobed leaves of this 10-15' mounding shrub/tree are overlaid with brick-red in spring and become bronze before deepening to dark-green in the summer. This stunning color-changing maple, (the reason it is called 'Calico'), turns to bright shades of orange and crimson in fall. This is a wonderful accent or specimen plant. S-PSh/M
The name of this tall, shrubby Japanese maple means "gold calico cloth," a reference to the diversity of both leaf color and shape. Spring leaves display different intensities of red with contrasting green venation. In summer, green leaves have bronze highlights and in fall, the foliage ranges from yellow and orange to crimson. The medium size leaves have unusual forms too: each elongated lobe tapers to a narrow point and curls upward to form a rounded trough.
An unusual leaf color not captured by this photo, it is purple in the early spring and turns brick colored in the summer, quite nice, actually. The tree can get 30'. This one is probably 20 and isn't getting much bigger. Fall color is orange red. zone 6
MATSUMURAE, red. As early leaves unfold on this tree, they are deep green brushed with red. Veins are in sharp contrast to the darker leaf color. Later in summer, leaves turn solid green. Fall colors are delightful, with many shades of orange and crimson. Each leaf has seven lobes that are deeply cut. It forms a medium-sized tree of somewhat shrubby habit. This is an interesting maple!
