Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Distinguished by dramatic variegation and deeply divided, narrow leaf lobes, this hardy, bushy Japanese maple deserves a prime location. If sited in full sun, spring leaves will display creamy veins against a purple background
Mikazuki Japanese Maple has reticulated leaves that start in spring with bright pinkish-red leaves with stylish purple veining making this a showstopper plant in the landscape. In the summer, the leaves will turn green-cream with darker green veining. Mikazuki Japanese Maple will have golden yellow fall colors to make a conversation piece in the garden. This cultivar performs best with afternoon shade or dappled shade all day.
Colorful all season, the narrowly lobed leaves of this small upright (8't x 5'w) open pink blush netted green and veined purple; summer leaves are cream and green, fall offers bright yellow-orange; wonderful accent/container. PSh-Sh/M
Another favorite [Sam] – Mikazuki is a relatively new cultivar developed and propagated by Talon Buchholz in Gaston, OR. The name in Japanese means ‘crescent moon’ which reflects the curvature of the leaves. Spring color is an incredible bright pink fading to a lighter pinkish white in the summer with a bronze overtone. The bright pink leaves are a wonderful contrast to the smooth, grass green color of the bark. Fall color is not easy to describe, but a combination of orange and pink tones. This maple has a moderate growth rate and has a very nice shape. Considered a dwarf the height and width in 10 years may be 8′ x 5′. Mikazuki is still a relatively unknown maple in most retail nurseries, but once you see it – especially in the spring you have to have one. At least that is what we did. A collector’s must. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

'Mikazuki', which means "crescent moon", is another appealing cultivar from Talon Buchholz of Oregon. Each lobe is undulated and rolled down, giving a narrow and longer appearance of a crescent moon. In spring, leaves are red with deep purple veining. By summer, leaves will turn creamy with green veining. Fall colors are orange and red. This upright maple with a bushy habit can reach 8 feet in ten years.
This beautiful variety has probably the deepest divided and narrowest looking lobes of any of the network veined variegated Japanese Maples. The large mainly seven-lobed leaves are divided almost to the leaf base. Each lobe is undulated and has rolled down margins, so that it appears narrow and long. The spring leaves emerge with a bright pink background and a green network of veins. Color slowly changes to creamy white which spreads toward the pink margins. Fall color is an unusually deep bright orange with green veins.
MATSUMURAE, variegated. Bushy, upright deciduous form having narrow-lobed leaves with lovely pink blush over white with green reticulation. Some are reporting that the color holds well through summer compared to some other reticulated varieties. Name means "crescent moon" in Japanese. Discovered and introduced by the Flora Wonder(tm) Collection of Buchholz Nursery
