Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Acer palmatum 'Hupps Dwarf' is a neat small (2'-3') shrubby Japanese maple. The new growth is pink through spring and summer. Would make a pretty plant for even the smallest garden.
Hupp’s Dwarf was found as a chance seedling by Barbara Hupp of Silverton, Oregon. The seedling was later taken to JD Vertree’s nursery in Eugene, Oregon – Maplewood in 1976. Vertrees studied this little maple for 10 years before naming it – Hupp’s Dwarf. After 10 years the maple was a little more than 1 foot tall. This miniature deciduous shrub has small, dark green leaves with serrated margins. New shoots are short with leaves congested at the tips. Sometimes the new spring growth is like the first photo – with some pink and white. More often the second photo is representative of spring color. Photo number three shows fall color – yellow to orange to scarlet. This is a super slow growing dwarf maple that only grows a few inches each year. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil – estimated to be 2′ tall x 2′ wide in 10 years. Once established Hupp’s Dwarf is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA zone 5. A collector’s must.

Short, stubby twigs and distinctive bark texture make it ideal for bonsai. Attractive in winter. Leaves are closely spaced, buff with red-tipped leaf whorls. Rare in the trade. Unique and Choice!
Hupp's Dwarf is a unique and fascinating Japanese Maple. Barely any space between nodes cause the leaves to pile up on each other, giving a really neat bonsai look. The leaves of this variety emerge green in spring with coral edging. Summer is a nice medium green with lots of new growth contrasting the older leaves. This variety is absolutely amazing for bonsai work. It is also a nice variety for trough and fairy gardens because of its minimal annual growth and natural dwarf habit.
One of the smallest tightest dwarfs; the leaves are mostly green but show some red and yellow when emerging; it is very brittle and hard to propagate but very desirable.
DWARF, green. A small shrub to 3' x 3' with small well developed 5-lobed leaves. The new growth is a pinkish-red, turning to a rich green, turning orange-gold in the fall. The most spectacular aspect of this tree is the tremendous variability of leaf size, that can range from the size of a dime to that of a quarter. The internodes are also so short that the leaves have a very dense look, giving the impression they are stacked upon one another. Grows very slowly. Excellent for bonsai.
