Hana Matoi Japanese Maple is a stunning variegated weeping maple. Hana Matoi originated as a sport from Toyama Nishiki, but the finely dissected leaves have even brighter colors of pink, cream and green. This variety will need protection from hot sun in order to prevent burning of the leaves and to retain the best color. The American translation of the name means "adorned with flowers". The spectacular colors can definitely give it the look of a flowering shrub.
This gorgeous, weeping, dwarf Japanese Maple is perfect for container or small gardens as it only reaches 3-8'. Featuring distinct, unique foliage; spring leaves are bright yellow, summer foliage is pink and green giving this tree a delightful variegated effect before turning orange to scarlet in autumn.S-PSh/M
A. PALMATUM ‘HANA MATOI’ - is a lace leaf maple with deep purple lovely foliage. The foliage has blotches of variegated rich pink. It’s interesting to see how the variegation occurs.
Hana matoi is a very rare variegated lace leaf weeping maple with very fine leaves. Strong pink, cream and green leaves are more definite than those of Toyama nishiki which may be its parent. As an added bonus the bark is yellow. The yellow color is stronger when the temperature is colder and it fades during the summer months. Hana matoi is a strong weeper with lots of pink and cream color. This maple needs to be staked for height to look its best. It is a moderate grower for such a spectacular and showy maple. This maple can reach at least 4′ tall with staking. Morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended. However, I planted my Hana matoi in full sun, which brings out more pink in the variegation. A wonderful addition to a home garden or patio container. This rare and hard to find maple is hardy to -10 degrees – USDA zone 6 once established. A collector’s must. 'Hana matoi' has to be the most striking dissectum introduced into the United States. Each lobe is finely divided, giving a delicate lacy effect. Base color is green with variegations of red, pink, purple, yellow, and cream, sometimes all on the same leaf! Variegations do not revert as some maples do. This pendulous maple makes a show-stopping specimen in any garden. 'Hana matoi' is a true dwarf growing only to 3 feet in ten years.
A semi dwarf Japanese Maple with very unique leaf color. Spring leaves are bright yellow with the outer portion of the leaf darker, giving a wonderful variegated effect.
This recently introduced maple originated as a sport of 'Toyama nishiki' at Tsukasa Maples in Japan. Its American translation means "adorned with flowers" and certainly with its spectacular pinks and creams it takes on a look of a flowering shrub. Stems also have streaks of color to enhance winter interest. Fall leaves turn brilliant orange to red. Best placed where it receives a break from the hot afternoon sun.
DISSECTUM, variegated. Maybe the most exciting new lace leaf we have recently seen. Leaves of red with streake of pink and cream along the lobe edges and sometimes over the whole lobe. This plant is reported to be a hybrid of 'Toyama nishiki'. It looks much like its parent and also 'Goshiki shidare'.
