This is an award-winning maple and rightfully so! It is one of the most heat and southern tolerant of all the Japanese maples. This gorgeous tree becomes a vigorous 30' shade tree with finely toothed, bright-green leaves. The embers show up autumn when the foliage turns brilliant shades of purple, orange and yellow. This fine specimen was selected by Dr. Dirr in Georgia. S-PSh/M
Finally a Japanese maple that does well in the southeast where sun and drought bring other selections to an early grave, though certainly it will appreciate regular summer watering. (Note above it will perform well in zone 10.) Green leaves with red petioles during the growing season give way to warm shades of gold and orange in the fall. Photo taken in late October.
'Glowing Embers' is not your average run-of-the-mill Japanese maple. It is an eye-catching Georgia Gold Medal Winner in 2005. This stunning tree was developed by University of Georgia horticulture professor Michael Dirr, and chosen for its tolerance to heat and not-so-perfect soil conditions. Its leaves emerge green in spring on red branches. This lovely green color lasts through summer with very little leaf scorch. Glowing Embers handles Tennessee summers with true Southern style! Its dense canopy will provide shade where space is limited. In fall, these leaves turn a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows which resemble the colors of glowing embers. This tree will reach an average height of 15 feet in ten years.
This award winning variety is in high demand for its adaptability to a wide variety of southern landscape conditions. It is able to tolerate extremely hot summers and full sun. This has made it very desirable for people living in southern states. Glowing Embers is named for its spectacular red and yellow leaf color which starts in summer and becomes even more intense during the fall.
PALMATUM, green. Here is a cool plant for those warmer climates. It thrives in the southeast, with sun and drought stresses (known to do ok in USDA zone 10)! Typical palmatum green leaves have red petioles in spring and summer, then give way to glowing golds and oranges in fall. It will form a fairly dense rounded crown.
