    About Acer

Maples are botanically classified as the genus Acer in the Sapindaceae, or soapberry family.

    Why grow Acer?

Maples in their native ranges are valuable wildlife plants. Though the individual flowers are small, a tree full of them will be buzzing with pollinators. The seeds provide food for birds and other wildlife, and various species of butterflies and moths may use them as hosts.

    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This smallest of the delicately-textured red linearilobums has tiny (2-3") leaves with finely-tipped strap-like lobes that keep their red color spring into fall; a unique rounded 3-6' upright shrub-tree. S-PSh/M
Smaller in both stature and leaf size than other red Japanese maples with strap-like leaves, this delicate-looking small tree makes a choice container plant. Its small leaves retain their purple-red coloring throughout summer and turn scarlet in fall. The
‘Beni ubi gohan’ is a lovely red dwarf only reaching 6′ tall at maturity. The name in Japanese means “five long red fingers” and it is in the linearilobum group of maples, which means the leaves are thin, string-like and in this case dense. The overall growth habit is compact compared to other maples, which makes for an excellent choice in a small garden or a patio container. New growth is light red turning to dark red for the summer. Unlike most JMs that fade in the summer – the dark red color of this ‘Beni’ holds up well during hot summer months. In the fall the color becomes a beautiful scarlet red. Beni ubi gohan is a moderate grower and is sought after by bonsai enthusiasts when the graft is low.

One look at Beni Ubi Gohon and you will see why these narrow red and red-green leaves give the name translated as ‘Five Red Fingers’. In spring the leaves open to green and red shaded turning to a striking scarlet red in the fall. Perfect for troughs, patio containers, and all small landscape scenes. It is slow growing untrimmed to about 4-5' at 10 years or easily kept shorter with trimming. Give normal Japanese maple conditions with filtered shade, moderate water and good drainage. Shipping size 18-24" just starting to form a crown.
One of the smallest bamboo leaf varieties, both in leaf dimensions and ultimate size. The spring leaf color is a light bronze-red with silver highlights, rapidly becoming purple-red for the summer. This variety is perfect for container and bonsai gardening because of its dwarf size. The name means "fine red fingers" referring to the strap-like leaves.
Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' - A dwarf red linearlobum type Japanese Maple. Plant grows in a round globe type. Leaves are rather fat for linear -type leaves. Nice structure inside. Fall color is red.
The smallest cultivar in the Linearilobum group both in stature and leaf. The small, 5-lobed straplike leaves open light bronze red and mature a purple red. The color holds well late into the season. A good choice for container culture.
LINEARLOBUM, red. The linearlobum group of maples is distinguished by the long, narrow leaf lobes which are often cut completely to the base of the leaf. Green forms are likened to bamboo in their light, delicate appearance. This unique form with red leaves becomes a small, shrubby bamboo look-alike for landscape or container
