Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Leaves on this maple have a similar reticulation to that of 'Shigitatsu sawa', but the color has reddish tones throughout the growing season. A unique, fairly slow-growing tree with beautiful foliage.
Aka Shigatatsu Sawa Japanese Maple has creamy spring/summer leaves with tints of reds and greens in its veins. This maple has a dense canopy with a strong central leader. Aka Shigatatsu Sawa Japanese Maple is great for an accent plant in the landscape or a container. Aka Shigatatsu Sawa turns outstanding shades of reds and oranges in the fall.
An unusual color combination: new 7-10 lobed leaves open maroon changing to green with dark veins and tones of pink and red washed over all; a slow-growing shrub, eventually to 8-12'. PSh/M
Beni Shigitatsu Sawa (also grown under the name Aka Shigitatsu Sawa) features one of the more unusual styles of variegation among Japanese Maples and also displays a large number of different colors throughout the year. In the spring the leaves emerge a light cream color with dark red and bronze veins and pink margins with hints of green. By summer the colors transition to green with red veins and a green and red margin. In the fall the colors change again to bright red veins against and orange base before filling out entirely with red by late fall.
Care and Receiving Your Tree
Like with other plants that are shipped bare root, you should plant your tree as soon as possible. When planting be sure to spread the roots out a little so they are not clumped together at the bottom of the hole. Japanese Maples want the top of their root crown to be covered with just an inch of soil - be careful not to apply heavy mulch directly on top of the roots as this can suffocate them. Water heavily as soon as you plant your tree but after that be careful not to overwater this beautiful specimen - Japanese Maples prefer long but less frequent watering. During the growing season we water our established trees for two hours once per week, depending on the climate and how hot/dry the weather is (maybe a little more frequently during the hottest part of the year and less frequently during spring and fall when it is cooler). If you are growing your Japanese Maples in containers be sure to use a well-drained soil mix (not peat or compost based, bark based soils do best) and water whenever the soil starts to dry out.

Japanese Maples do best when fertilized in the spring, we recommend a slow release pellet like Osmocote Plus in April. Don't apply fertilizer later than mid-June because it will encourage too much late season growth that will not have time to harden off enough for winter. The exact formula doesn't matter too much, we usually use 15-10-10 but any other works fine for Japanese Maples. Osmocote is the brand we use because it releases steadily for several months and so there is very little risk of over-fertilizing your plants.

Acer palmatum 'Beni shigitatsu sawa' - Same tree as 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' a variegated Japanese Maple. Leaves look almost like a variegated house plant. Leaves are white laced with pink and red and edged with green. In summer the leaf turns reddish-green. Fall colors is a blush red.
Striking maroon leaves in spring, turn yellow-green-pink with dark veins. Quite a combination! Rare in the trade.
In the spring, when these leaves come out with the delicate veining, you will be enchanted. If you grow the tree in the sun, much of the charm will be lost by the end of the summer. So plant in half-shade and enjoy!
PALMATUM, variegated. This tree is known for its most unusual foliage, a combination of a dark reddish-green, pink and white. A very beautiful, small tree with deeply incised palmate leaves.
