Beni Shi En Japanese Maple is a stunning variegated maple with deeply cut leaves. It leafs out in spring in a rosy or purple color with irregular lime variegation on the edges of the leaves. Summer brings green and red colors while still holding the variegation. Fall brings out the deeper reds and purples.
Large deeply-divided leaves open rose-red, darkening to deep purple, even in the sun!, followed by orange in fall on this vigorous yet compact 8-12' rounded upright; a fine tree from Harold Johnston in Alabama.
Leaves emerge raspberry red and darken to purple as they elongate. Leaves have twisted lobes with a very thin cream outline. The appearance of reddish new leaves on top of the bronzed interior foliage give the tree a "red smoke" appearance, which is the t
This variegated cultivar name in Japanese means ‘Red Smoke’. This rare and hard to find maple provides, like most maples, color changes throughout the spring, summer and fall. New spring growth is feathery looking with a rosy-red color that changes to a red purple – the smoke color in the summer. In the fall, the pumpkin orange color evolves to scarlet red. ‘Beni shi en’ has a moderate growth habit to form a small upright tree. In 10 years this maple may reach 7′. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

The almost strap like leaves of this unusual cultivar change color throughout the growing season. The young feathery leaves emerge a rosy red, changing to purple and then to green with contrasting edges, giving a unique variegated effect. Occasionally, some leaves are distorted. The name means Red smoke.
Strap-like, deeply divided leaves emerge rosy-red then purple, then green with light midrib. Pink hue in late summer and gold in fall. Best coloration in full sun. A selection made by the late Harold Johnson in Alabama.
Beni shi en is an unusual redleafed variegate. In the spring it starts out red with darker edging on the long, narrow, deeply divided leaves. The plant is a moderate grower but never gets large. It was developed in the Deep South and is recommended for that climate as it doesn't burn in the sun but holds its red color well. zone 6.
MATSUMURAE, variegated. An exceptional, patented plant from Harold Johnston with straplike, deeply divided leaves. The new foliage has a rosy-bronze cast that lasts for quite awhile before becoming a soft green, edged with white in summer. The second flush of rosy-bronze growth unfolds atop the slightly variegated leaves of summer and creates a sight to behold! (Patentened?)
