This maple is similar looking to A. pal. 'Sango-Kaku'. The great thing is A. pal. 'Beni Kawa' is dramatically hardier. A. pal. 'Sango Kaku' will regularly have winter damage or die even in western Oregon. The beautiful red stems through out the winter are preceded by green summer foliage and great yellow fall color.
A ?new? and even better?! coral-bark, this small (to 10') spreading tree has small leaves of a soft green... until they turn bright gold in fall; its bark darkens in winter to an intense coral-red: pretty all year. S-PSh/M
Beni Kawa Japanese Maple is in the coral bark family. It holds its color through the heat of summer. To get the most colorful bark, it needs lots of winter sun and cold. Beni kawa is said to be very cold hardy. This a very close cousin of the Sango Kaku and the bark is darker.
'Beni kawa' is a better, more compact version of Sango kaku. This vase-shaped tree leafs out two weeks later than Sango kaku. Its fresh green leaves change to yellow and orange in fall. The name means "red bark" which makes it a perfect winter focal point. This tree can reach 15 feet in 10 years and can take full sun well.
Acer palmatum 'Beni kawa' - This red barked "coral bark" Japanese maple tree is similar to the popular ' Sango kaku ', however slower growing, reaching about 10' in 10 years in the ground. This tree makes wonderful bonsai. Grafted Japanese Maples
Brilliant red bark in winter - more red than Sango kaku. Bright green leaves in summer shine against the red bark. Fall colors are yellow and orange.
Spectacular glowing red bark makes a definite winter statement. Very similar to Coral Bark or Sango Kaku but the stems keep their red coloration through the second year. Beautiful yellow fall color and rich green spring foliage which is often edged in red.
An upright vase shaped form of Coral Bark Maple. The bark is usually more red in winter compared to the more salmon color of it's more famous cousin 'Sango kaku'. 'Beni kawa' also tends to be slightly wider and shorter. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange and usually is an attractive combination of both.
Spectacular bright salmon-red shoots in winter. Deeper and more persistent color on older stems than on the cultivar 'Sango kaku.' Five to seven-lobed green leaves are edged with red. Turns a wonderful golden yellow in the fall.
Yellow-green leaves contrast with red bark, fall golden yellow leaves, winter red bark silhouette
With red bark in winter, this cultivar is very much like 'Sango Kaku', but it is somewhat more vase-shaped.
PALMATUM, green. "Sensational" describes this terrific maple! The new bark is coral to salmon-red adding interest to the winter landscape. This artistic cultivar is full and twiggy, and with its bright branches, will be seen from a great distance, allowing this tree to be effectively used to draw the eye to a desired area. Summer dresses the tree in dense foliage of true green, sometimes lightly edged with red tints. Along with this, the bark changes to a yellowish color.
