This compact, upright-growing maple has two-toned new growth, displaying light-green leaves with ruby-red margins. Outstanding burgundy-red fall color is highlighted by undertones of deeper greens and purples.
Difficult to propagate and slow. So rarely offered. Very dwarf with rosy purple new growth.
ACER palmatum BENI HIME Zones: 5-9. At last, a Japanese Maple that is small-scale for garden railroads, miniature landscapes, rock gardens, and Bonsai. No more need to root prune or top prune to keep small as these old trees show. Beni Hime matures to about 2' tall (That is 48' in ½" scale!) with tiny leaves, about 1" long. Beautiful reddish tones until fall then takes on yellow, dark red and gold. Although reported to take more sun than most Japanese maples, filtered shade is preferred especially in hot summer areas. These are miniature perfection! Photos show Specimen size in Bonsai type container and close up of penny sized leaves in vivid fall color. Note that you do not need to keep these trees in containers. They do best in the ground and will stay small. Shipping size: 18" high x 28" wide with ¾ - 1" trunk. Shapes very slightly.
A dwarf, dense shrub. Incredibly tiny leaves emerge in spring in an intense pink-red hue, and can be less than one quarter of an inch in diameter. Fall brings on vibrant red tones. Name means "red dwarf" in Japanese.
Takes a little extra care, but worth it! Plant in full sun in spot with good air circulation to prevent early spring fungal disease. Great red stem color in winter. Ideal in containers and for bonsai. Responds to pruning. The English translation means "red dwarf".
Beni hime is one of the smallest red leafed dwarfs; the leaves are 5 lobed but with a roundy look--and small, very small. It is one of the more challenging cultivars to grow but definitely worth the trouble (perfect drainage, etc)
DWARF, red. One of the smallest forms of A. palmatum, this is a wonderful and rare cultivar. The fingernail-sized red foliage makes the plant especially good for bonsai, and the tree makes an unusual item in the garden. Most maples have large foliage displays that can only be made small with trimming. This is a cultivar that stays tight in growth habit, yet it can be very vigorous, making an excellent specimen plant quickly. It's a great container plant or a focal point in a garden of miniatures!
