Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Large pyramidal tree with blue-green to silvery needles ?cheerfully matching the clear mountain sunlight?; ?it takes with the most accommodating good nature to cultivation...? (Peattie). S-PSh/M
Abies concolor, known as the White Fir or Colorado White Fir, is the most commonly grown landscape fir in the United States because it has good heat tolerance and is a better choice for areas with hot summers than other species. The color is a pleasant light blue or silver and is similar to Colorado Blue Spruce but without the super sharp needles that make Spruce painful to handle or brush against. White Firs are easy to grow and cultivate and are widely used as Christmas trees, this is an excellent choice for a living Christmas Tree because it will grow in a pot for longer than other fir species. Be sure to plant your White Fir in an area with good drainage because these trees don't like their roots to be too wet in the winter. Avoid planting in heavy clay soils.
Abies concolor is closely related to the low elevation Abies grandis (Grand Fir) and the two hybridize freely whenever their ranges overlap. The seed source for these trees is from San Juan, far away from Grand Fir populations and ensuring pure genetics of White Fir.

Large pyramidal tree with blue-green to silvery needles. Growth Rate slow
Needles are almost vertically arranged on the stems and are flattened and glaucous on both sides. Generally, this fir grows to 50' but can reach 100' or more. Conical in habit, it generally branches to the ground, but branches on the upper half of the tree point upward.
