Nursery contributed plant descriptions

With beautifully dark, shining green needles, this magnificent 100-150' tree is native to the mountains of Europe; from the Alps to the Pyrenees and south into Italy, Bulgaria and Greece. This is a widely used species; it contains a resinous essential oil which can be extracted for use in perfumes and soap, the leaves and bark have long been used for production of spruce beer and its wood is strong, lightweight and fine grained, commonly used for construction, furniture, and paper. S-PSh/M
Slow growing, this stately evergreen can reach heights of 100' or more. Its needles are dark green above with two white bands on the underside. The Silver Fir can tolerate more shade than the typical fir but requires somewhat more moist soil.
